"Report from the Third International Geographical Congress and Exhibition…", Wheeler, George (Lt)

The Third International Geographical Congress and Exhibition was held in Venice, Italy and featured 6,645 scholarly articles including books, maps, globes, atlases and instruments. The event was attended by nearly 1,200 delegates from 29 different countries and brought together the most recent works in geography and hydrography. This complete report, gathered by George Wheeler, includes a brief summary of the Congress and Exhibition, with the bulk of the text devoted to land and marine surveys of the countries represented (including the United States, most of Western Europe, Russia, India and many more). In addition to the text there are five chromolithographic plates and four folding maps: A. Sketch Showing Proposed Disposition of Sheets for a General Topographic Atlas of the United States, 1875 Condition: There is a tear that enters 8" into map at right and a few additional small tears.
B. Map of the World, Showing Areas of Systematic Detailed Topographic Surveys... Condition: Cleanly severed in half with several long fold separations and a tear that enters 2.5" into map near Australia.
C. Sketch, Showing Divisions and Extent of the General Topographic Surveys...of Europe Condition: Printed color with color transfer. The upper left corner is severed in two pieces, one of which has been reattached with archival tape, and there are several long fold separations and a few additional tears. The far right-hand portion of the map has also been cleanly severed along the fold.
D. Index to Atlas of India Condition: Printed color with color offsetting.

586pp, quarto, hardbound, three-quarter calf with red cloth boards and gilt title on spine. Bookplate on inside front cover, noting that the report was donated to the Hill Memorial Library by Edward Gay, former Senator of Louisiana.

The text and pages are very good. All maps are a bit brittle with some light toning and scattered foxing, and range in condition from good to poor. See description for additional condition issues of maps. The plates are all in very good condition. Covers and spine are rubbed, edges are bumped, and one endpaper is detached.
