This detailed map of central Virginia is the bottom sheet of three maps describing the Seat of War. Staunton, in the Shenandoah Valley, is at upper left; Petersburg, along the Appomattox River, is at lower right. This early map series was intended to inform British readers with enough detail that they could follow the reports of the battles. Although troop dispositions and fortifications are not shown, two U. S. Arsenals are shown west of Richmond.
