"Transilvania", Ortelius, Abraham

This strongly engraved map of the fabled area in present-day Romania shows mountain ranges, forests and the fertile river valleys. It is decorated with three strapwork cartouches, including one that credits Sambucus' map of 1566 as the basis of this map. Second state with four lines of text in cartouche at right. Latin text on verso, published between 1609-1612 with a visible crack in the plate at lower left.

Condition: B+

Original color with wide margins and light toning, minor offsetting, and marginal soiling. There is a small burn mark in lower cartouche, and a small abrasion near centerfold at center.
