Roller Map Patents:
These two booklets represent the public notice of patents granted by Royal decree or those held as Provisional. Both are wrapped in original blue paper cover, printed at the Great Seal Patent Office, 25 Southampton Buildings, Holborn and printed by George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode. These rarely seen booklets describe the intense work by inventors who were making incremental improvements in the globe and map making process. In many cases the patent application was made decades earlier.

A) A.D. 1814 - No. 3801. Specification of Joseph Roberts. Apparatus to be Attached to Map Rollers, & c., 1856. Includes a large fold-out plan.
B) A.D. 1853 - No. 101. Specification of William Steads. Blinds, Maps, Charts, & c., Wound on Rollers., 1854. Improvements in design of roller maps and charts. Includes a small fold-out plan.

Apparatus Patents:
These patents consist of loose sheets from the public notices of two separate patents granted by Royal decree. These were printed in London by Darling & Son for Her Majesty's Stationery Office. These patents describe the work by inventors who were making incremental improvements in the globe and map making process.

C) (Patent # 6489) Improvements in Azimuth Apparatus, whereby Bearings of the Sun, Moon, Stars, or other Objects, can be more Easily Obtained and Used for the Detection of the Deviation of Error of the Compass, by Frank & Alfred Reynolds, dated 1887, (5.5 x 8.8").
D) (Patent # 11,177) An Instrument for Demonstrating the Elliptical Movement of the Earth round the Sun and also the Movements of the Moon round the Earth, by Auguste Garassut, dated 1889 (13.2 x 9").

Covers lightly soiled on all. A) has a clean 7" fold separation. B) has a 1/2" tear that just enters neatline. C) has minor soiling along edges. D) has minor soiling along edges and a library stamp.
