South Mountain is in the Blue Ridge Mountains in southern Pennsylvania and western Maryland. On September 14th, 1862, the Union forces defeated the Confederate forces during the South's first invasion of the North. The map shows roads, towns, terrain features, fences, Union and Confederate troop positions and names of commanders. The map covers an area about 5 miles wide by 9 miles long. Lithograph was prepared in the Bureau of Topographical Engineers.
