This remarkable map is the first geological map of Long Island. It was drawn by Mather who was the Geologist of the First District of New York. The topography is from the Surveys of J. Calvin Smith. Eight different geological formations are named in the legend, but while the map is fully colored, the legend is not. The legend also identifies Rail Roads, those Projected, Canals, and Turnpikes & Roads. The large inset "Map of New - York Island" shows all of Manhattan and north beyond settlement to Forts George, Tyron, and Cook Hill.

Included with this lot is Topographical sketch of Oyster Pond Point and the Vicinity (7.3" x 12.2"), which is part of the same report and is drawn from the surveys of W.H. Sidell. Includes the village Greenport with its streets shown in a small grid pattern.

References: Marcou #240.

Condition: B+

A very nice example of this large map. No significant flaws, with light toning from report pages and scattered foxing primarily in the blank margins. Crisp impression. The small map is very good.
