These two interesting maps were published in an 1870 California immigration booklet entitled All About California by the California Immigrant Union. The aim of the publication was to promote settlement in the state and thus create a market for farmland and real estate, both of which were in huge supply. A. Map of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific R. R. Line & Connections the Short Line Route Between the East and the Far West, Fisk Russel & Ames, (25.3 x 5.3"). This is a detailed railroad strip map from the East to West coast. It shows the newly completed Central/Union Pacific Railway and the proposed southern route of the Union Pacific going from Sheridan, Kansas to San Jose, California. The Pony Express route, shown here as the Overland Mail Route, is also highlighted. The verso of this folding map displays a promotional ad touting the railroad's mail route across the country. B+ - There is a clean fold separation that is repaired on verso and some even toning as to be expected.

B. Map of San Joaquin Valley, John T. Little, (11 x 8.5"). This is a promotional map offering 200,000 acres of land for sale between Merced and Fresno. The map itself covers the area from the San Francisco Bay south to Tulare Lake. There is a box in the lower left corner that gives more information regarding the land for sale. B+ - Narrow top and bottom margins, as issued. There is some text show-through and occasional toning and foxing, else very good.
