A. Map of the Railroads in Whole or Part West, North, or South of the Missouri River to which the United States Have Granted Any Loan or Credit or Subsidy in Bonds or Lands. June 30, 1883, Thomas Donaldson, 1883, (25 x 14"). This map of the United States is one of Donaldson's controversial maps, which became a political issue in the election of 1884. Color coding identifies the railroads that are receiving subsidies (either bond or land, or both) and branch railroads. Different line forms are used to indicate what fees the railroads may charge the government for freight hauled: full rates, reduced rates, and those that must provide free transportation for the U.S. Government. A+ - Very nice example.

B. Map Exhibiting the Leading Transportation Lines of the Pacific Coast, Rand McNally & Co., 1887, (23 x 20.3"). Prepared for the Bureau of Statistics, this large folding chart of the western United States details rail and sea routes. Attractively colored with the western states highlighted in pink and the five major railroad systems shown in primary colors. Locates the routes of the Denver & Rio Grande, the Canadian Pacific, Northern Pacific, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroads. Shows the shipping routes of clipper and steamer ships to/from San Francisco, Seattle, Portland and several other coastal cities. A - Nice clean image that was originally folded but is now flat and backed with tissue. Very faint toning, else fine.
