Two charts on a single sheet. At top is the Route de la Corvette l'Astrolabe au travers des Carolines. At bottom is a detailed chart of the northern coastline of New Guinee, the Dampier Strait and part of the coast of New Britain. These charts were made during the first voyage of the Astrolabe, which included a number of important accomplishments including the discovery of the Fijian islands of Matuku and Totoya, charting of the Loyalty Islands, Tonga, Moluccas, and part of New Guinea, and surveying the New Zealand coastline.

Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842) was a French explorer who explored the south and western Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica. He made three important Pacific explorations; 1822-25 aboard the Coquille commanded by Duperrey, 1826-29 commanding the Astrolabe, and again commanding the Astrolabe in 1837-40 that included exploration of Antarctica.
