This pair of rare maps shows the northern hemisphere in two different and unique projections. The first, centered on the North Pole, is presented in a convex perspective. The second, centered on Paris, is shown from an internal viewpoint as if viewed from the center of the earth. Both show the island of California. These maps are from an extremely rare scientific atlas published by Pierre Moullart-Sanson, Nicolas Sanson's grandson. By the time Pierre inherited the Sanson plates, they had become outmoded with the development of scientific cartography through the Academy of Sciences in France. The maps from this atlas were developed to compete in this new environment. Unfortunately the Moullart-Sanson business was not commercially successful, and his maps are infrequently seen on the market today.
