"Colton's Township Map of the State of Illinois", Colton, G.W. & C.B.

This large and highly detailed pocket map was "Drawn, Engraved and Published by G.W. & C.B. Colton" in 1869. It folds into original brown boards (3.8 x 5.8") with embossing and gilt title. The beautifully and precisely engraved map presents a huge amount of information. It is surrounded by a decorative and boldly engraved border in a design uncommon for the Colton firm. Includes the large inset: "Plan of Cook County & Vicinity of Chicago." The extensive legend locates Organized Townships, county towns, villages, railroads both completed and in progress and canals. Blank verso. Paper label on inside front cover lists other maps and atlases available from the firm.

The map shows well with a fine impression and very nice original color. A couple of folds with short splits and three fold sections with archival tape on verso for support.
