The map shows the area surveyed during Hayden's San Juan Reconnaissance of 1877. Different colors are used to indicate various regions including those mapped during the Reconnaissance, settled for mining purposes, Towns and thickly populated mining camps, and Toll and County Roads in traveling condition. The topography in the eastern half of Colorado is from Clarence King's surveys. It shows detailed information on roads and toll roads (including the Salt Lake Wagon Road), railroads, Indian Reservations, populations districts, topography, hydrology, etc. Small table within the map is "Main Populated Districts 1877" gives populations for 13 cities and areas.
