This lovely sea chart features several South Pacific islands discovered by the Dutch explorers Jacob le Maire and Willem Schouten in 1617. Included are Cocos, Veriaders, and Good Hope (Tafahi, Niuatoputapu and Niuafo'ou of Tonga) and Hornsche and Horne (Alofi and Futana of the Futana and Wallis islands group). Robert Dudley, a skilled mathematician and navigator, was exiled from England and settled in Florence where he published this chart in the first sea atlas using Mercator's projection. The chart was engraved by Antonio Lucini and beautifully embellished with calligraphy, a large compass rose and a sailing ship.
