This map of Vienna and its vicinity illustrates the region during the Ottoman-Habsburg wars. In 1683, after the Ottoman Empire had besieged the city for two months, the great Battle of Vienna was fought in the hills west of the city. The battle is notable for including the largest cavalry charge in history by the famous Winged Hussars of Poland . It marked the turning point in the Ottoman-Habsburg wars and began the Habsburg Empire's dominance over Central Europe. The map is a splendid example of fine engraving with the hills, farms and forests presented with nearly 3-D effect.
