This lot contains a pair of views on a single sheet and bird's-eye plan of the city of Vienna. They provide a great view of the city, suburbs and fortifications. Prior to the great Battle of Vienna (1683) between the Austrian Habsburgs and the Ottoman Empire, the Viennese demolished the houses around the city walls and cleared the debris, leaving an empty plain that would expose the Turks to defensive fire. The Turks then dug an extensive network of defensive trenches to help protect them as they advanced toward the city. These trenches are depicted east of the city on the plan and the cleared area around the central city is still very visible.
