"Liverpool and its Environs. Engraved from an actual Survey made by William Swire…", Neele & Son

This uncommon plan was produced for Edward Baines' history of Lancashire. It provides minute detail of the city, docks and surrounding countryside. An extensive key identifies important sites and a small vignette shows the town hall and exchange buildings. An inset plan of Liverpool from 1720 provides an interesting comparison and illustrates the city's growth during the Industrial Revolution when the city became the conduit through which raw materials, such as cotton from the Americas, were imported for the industrial centers of northern England and the midlands, and manufactured goods were exported to their markets. The plan is further decorated with three official seals and the Liverpool coat of arms. Engraved by Neele & Son and published by William Wales and Co. of Castle Street, Liverpool.
