This rare and very interesting map of Dominica is based on observations made by Davis Ross of the H.M.S. Montagu, 1760-61. It presents a different outline for the island than other large-scale maps of the period with Cape Capucin forming a distinctive point. The map includes a large inset of Prince Ruperts Bay, and is beautifully engraved to show the mountainous topography of the island. We can find little about David Ross, other than a nineteenth century book dealer's catalog entry for his map that was published in circa 1765. Lattre's version has only appeared once on the market in the past 30 years.
