A matched pair of maps which share the same decorative borders with graphic elements in each corner. The first map has an early depiction of the California Gold Regions here called the Region de l'Or. A large area which follows the Sacramento River valley and part of the Central Valley is delineated with engraved line and colored to suggest gold. The map contains large territories in the West including the Independent Republic of Texas. In contrast to the recognition of the Gold Region the state of California is not identified, rather the entire Southwest is labeled Californie. Oregon Territory extends to the Rocky Mountains with the large Mandan District to the east as far as the Missouri River. From the Missouri the large Sioux District extends to the Huron District in today's Wisconsin and Minnesota.

The second map is centered on Mexico and the Southwest showing the Republic of Texas. It contains pre-Mexican War geography apart from the addition of a dashed line denoting the new territorial limits of the United States. The inset "Guatemala" shows most of Central America through Costa Rica, all labeled Guatemala. The region along the California coast is called Nouvelle Californie and the Baja is Ancienne Californie. Nice set of matched map.
