The years after the Civil War had seen many other tribes and emigrants move into lands of the Indian Territory. In 1893 the Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes was created to sort out and divide the land between tribes and Freedmen, who were the African-American descendants of slaves freed after the Civil War. These maps are part of the documentation published annually by the commission.

The first map, dated 1900, was complied and drawn by R.L. McAlpine for the Seventh Annual Report of the Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes. (25.3" x 28") This carefully engraved and colored map shows coal leases per the Choctaw and Chickasaw Agreement of 1898 along with the names of leases in a table under the title. The legend uses color to locate 29 companies operating 104 Approved Coal Leases. Colored circles are used to identify the coal claims still operated under "National Contracts or Leases" by the Choctaw Mining & Mercantile Co., Mike Perona, and by the Perry Brothers. Also provides a detailed view of the rivers and creeks, railroads and towns. Beautiful example. Issued folding, now backed with archival tissue. (A+)

The second map, dated 1902, was complied and drawn by C.H. Dana for the Tenth Annual Report. (24" x 26") This map also uses color block to show the "Location of Coal Deposits in the Creek Nation." Very detailed it also shows watershed, townships, rail roads, wagon roads, towns and villages, missions and court houses. Surrounded by Oklahoma on the west, Choctaw Nation on the south and the Cherokee Nation on the east. The few high areas are indicated by hachure. Issued folding, now backed with archival tissue. No flaws except for light toning on two folds. (B+)
