This locally produced map was prepared by McGee & Phillips, Civil Engineers in Cincinnati. E.B. Andrews, Geological Professor at Marietta College, added the geological information. The map is a very unusual work - a railroad map that also presents geological information. Large areas are subdivided by engraved line and hand coloring to delineate Black Slate, Sub-Carb. Limestone, Iron Ore, Waverly and Pomeroy deposits. The map shows much of southern Ohio in the region between Chillicothe and Marietta, west of Cincinnati. Filled with interesting and historical place names including Salt Works, several Iron Works, Foundries and Mills. At upper left is a large two - part section, the upper one detailing strata, the other is an elevation plan. The strata plan identifies numerous minerals and coal deposits. The railroad runs from Marietta though Chillicothe with Blanchester being the further station to the west in the direction of Cincinnati. With a branch to Portsmouth and another uncompleted branch to an area with several ore furnaces at the Ohio River in Upper Perry and Hamilton counties. The map locates counties, towns and villages, watershed and commercial facilities. Little is known about Andrews beyond being a professor at Marietta College as early as 1861 and by 1869 the Assistant Geologist for the Ohio Survey. This scarce map was printed in Cincinnati by Middleton, Stobridge & Co. Not in Macou & Macou (geology) or Modelski railroad references.
