This is a very unusual German text edition of Rand McNally & Co.'s popular New Family Atlas of the World. The Rand McNally company was one of the most successful map publishers of the latter part of the 19th century. That was largely due to diversification in the types of maps produced, advances in printing technology, and the company's extensive and innovative marketing and distribution system. This atlas is a prime example of that, as it was designed for the growing German immigrant population in the upper Midwestern states, with cities such as Cleveland, Milwaukee, Hoboken, and Cincinnati having German American populations near 40% at the time of its publication.

The maps are identical to the English edition, but the text is in German and there are 12 additional pages making up a large map of Germany. Small folio, 331 pp., including 89 map, some printed on two sheets. There are also several diagrams, charts and a lovely sheet containing the flags of the major countries of the world. Original binding in gilt titled and embossed, brown cloth covered boards.
