This complete atlas contains 62 beautifully rendered state and country maps and several thematic maps and diagrams interspersed throughout the text that display the geology, weather, tides, agriculture and animal kingdoms of the world. It also features the beautiful frontispiece depicting a group of native Americans looking out over a valley filled with new settlements and a steamship on the river. About half of the maps are double-page maps and 26 are related to the United States. This 1863 edition is a transitional version with both steel engraved plates with the strapwork borders (many including vignettes), and the new lithographed maps with the chain work borders. This atlas also features the New Military Map of the United States that shows all state and territory boundaries rather than the limits of military divisions. The map of the Southwest shows the new territories of Nevada and Arizona with their initial boundaries. Idaho Territory appears on two maps as it takes in all the territory that would eventually comprise Montana and Wyoming. There is a fine double-page map of Texas. Folio. Hardbound in original quarter leather and green cloth with gilt titles on front cover.
