"Novissima et Accuratissima Totius Americae Descriptio", Ogilby, John

Francis Lamb engraved this map of the Americas for Ogilby. It is based on Nicolass Visscher's map of the same title (1658) but is updated with English nomenclature and other features that emphasize Britain's prominence in the New World. Nova Albion is boldly printed on the northern part of the island of California, and the place name P S^r F Drake is introduced. Jamaica is made more prominent in the West Indies. In the British Colonies in North America, the names Boston, N. London and Milford appear and New Amsterdam is renamed New York. Numerous rivers are also given their English names and Hilton head makes its first appearance on a map. The configuration of the single Great Lake is changed and named the Lake of Higonautens. The internal cartography in South America is updated to show a more correct Amazon River. The decorative elements are also copied from Visscher but the dedication cartouche honors Ogilby's patron Anthony Ashley, Baron of Wimburne.

Issued folded, now flattened with old paper repairs on the fold intersections and some marginal tears. There is some minor toning in the map and some abrasion and facsimile in the title cartouche.
