This pair of fine copper engravings feature major buildings at Versailles that were designed by the famous architect, Jules Hardouin-Mansart. The first is the Château de Clagny that stood northeast of the Château de Versailles. It was the home of Madame de Montespan, one of the most celebrated mistresses of Louis XIV. The second engraving shows the Ecuries Royales, Royal Stables. The Grand Ecurie faced the palace, across from the Place d’Armes and housed the royal mounts, while the Petite Ecurie kept the carriage horses. Performances of equestrian ballet took place regularly at the Place d’Armes.
