This separately issued map was a promotional piece prepared for J. & H. Miller of Columbus, Ohio. Drawn on Mercator's Projection, the map is centered on Europe and is filled with a huge amount of information. Locates hundreds of towns and cities, watershed, major topography, coastal features, and more. Dozens of explorers' routes are delineated including all of Cook's, Capt. Furneaux, Capt. Biscoe, Perouse, Vancouver, etc. Commercial routes for clippers and steamers are shown: Boston to Liverpool via Halifax 2,600 miles. Rather than show the limited understanding of Antarctica, Colton hides the region with three inset maps: Picairn's Island; Juan Fernandez; and Norfolk Island. At each corner is a large inset: Map of the Republic of Liberia, on the West Coast of Africa; Sandwich Islands; District of Columbia; and Map of Palestine and the Holy Land. The large, elaborate border is composed of four separate border-styles. This is a rare separately issued map for which we find only one prior sales record.
