This is a charming little map of North America with California as an island embellished with a strapwork title cartouche. California is shown with an indented northern coastline. The R. de Nort drains into the Gulf of California from a large interior lake in the country of Les Apaches. All five Great Lakes are shown but still misshapen and opened to the west. The Mississippi River has numerous tributaries, but barely rises above Spanish Florida with no obvious origin. There are many place names within Nouveau Mexique including Santa Fe and Grenade. The British colonies are shown simply as Nouvelle Angleterre and Virginie. Folding as issued, on fine hand laid paper with full, original margins. Dark, early impression. A hint of a couple areas of very light foxing, still very good.
