This portrait is from the rarest of Indian prints from the first published collection of portraits of native North Americans. They were made "on the spot and in the field" by James Otto Lewis, primarily during treaty meetings in the Upper Great Lakes during the 1820s. The original art for this lithograph was painted at the Treaty of Prarie du Chien in 1825 by Lewis. This treaty was actually a complex set of treaties that spanned many years - read more here. Lithographed on stone by Lehman & Duval and reportedly colored by J. Barincou.
