"Novissima et Perfectissima Africae Descriptio", Danckerts, Justus

An uncommon map of the continent based on De Wit's map of 1680, retaining both the geography (with all its fictitious details) and decorative cartouche. Gone, though, are the other decorative elements (wildlife, ships and sea monsters), reflecting the newer style of the eighteenth century. New place names appear along the western and southern coasts. The colorful cartouche includes Moorish traders, black Africans, a child riding a large elephant and two lions reclining on the title block. This is the first state with finely engraved lines distinguishing the lakes and rivers.
