This uncommon map provides a detailed view of the British and French possessions in North America on the eve of the French and Indian War. It covers the region from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, and from the Mississippi River to Newfoundland. The locations of several French and British forts are noted with emphasis on the military strengths of France in the region west of the mountains. The battlefield (here called Fort Conteste) where General Braddock was defeated in the skirmishes that led up to the war is noted in the Ohio Valley. The map also provides good information on the rivers, Indian villages and tribal territory. The title cartouche incorporates a lengthy description of Canada and the French explorations in the region.
