"Cornwall", Speed, John

This extravagant and decorative map of the county of Cornwall, inset with a view of Launceston, was engraved by Jodocus Hondius. The map is filled with place names and charming, pictorial topography. Vignettes along the right of the map show the Cheesewring and the Hurlers, as well as other ancient stone monuments of the county. At bottom are the arms of the several Dukes of Cornwall, flanked with figures. The sea is filled with sea monsters, a highly decorative compass rose, and several fine sailing ships. This bears the first edition imprint of Sudbury and Humble, so was published in either 1611 or 1614. Related English text on verso with Book I., Chap. 11., (page) 21.

The impression is very dark and early. The sheet is overall evenly toned and the margins are full. One spot in inset and repaired marginal splits at top and bottom of centerfold.
