This unusual map of the length of Manhattan was prepared by W. C. Rogers and published by Joseph Shannon. It is presented in an unusual elongated format and includes some detail in parts of Queens and the Bronx. The property lines and landowners' names are superimposed on the map. Central Park is well detailed, and railway routes and important structures are shown and named. The Lunatic Asylum, Work House, Alms Houses, Penitentiary, and Hospital are all located on Roosevelt Island (here Blackwell’s Island). Depth soundings are given in the city’s waterways. Joseph Shannon's Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York was a compendium of information on the city, its government, social organizations, buildings, economic institutions, and public works.
