"[Lot of 4 Battle of Antietam]", U.S. War Department

Four original albumen photographs of the Battle of Antietam mounted on stiff cards with titles below in the fashion of Carte-de-Visite. Each was published by Sydney M. Southard, Burlington, VT. The scenes were drawn during the battle by James Hope, a Scottish-American who served in the war with the 2^nd Vermont Infantry. The cards are: Battle of Antietam; Looking South, No. 1; Battle of Antietam, Looking West, No. 2; After the Battle. Bloody Lane Antietam; and Burnside Bridge, Battle of Antietam (Gen. Burnside and Escort). The photos are of original paintings after sketches by Hope "on the spot." A rare and poignant set which depicts the first major battle to take place on Northern soil. The infamous battle was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 casualties.

Tack hole at top of each. The images are quite good which attests to the proper storage over the years which kept light away from the delicate image.
