Two volumes bound in one book. This exhaustive historical account begins with the arrival of Cortez, providing a "sketch of ancient Aztec civilization" from 1511 to 1530, and finishs with the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848. The two volumes provide a thorough examination of the political history of Mexico with 18 chapters devoted to the Spanish Viceroyalty. The second volume includes a full-page, uncolored Map of the Valley of Mexico With a Plan of the Mexican Defences and Line of U.S. Army's Operations, that shows the area surrounding Lake Texcuco with small plans of the City of Mexico, Guadeloupe\Hidalgo, Tenepantla and others. The map has good detail of topography and watershed, and locates the Gate of San Antonio, sight of a gallant charge by Captain Phillip Kearney, who lost an arm in the fighting. Also included is a single-page Plan of the Ruins of the Pyramids of Teotihuacan, and engraved portraits of Hernan Cortez and Santa Anna. By Brantz Mayer. Volume I has 433 pages, volume II has 398. Contents are good to very good with some occasional foxing, and a signature that is partially loose. The covers have some scuffing and shelf wear with minor loss to the edges and at the extremities of the spine. Binding is good.
