Samuel Augustus Mitchell's school atlases and geographies were among the most commercially successful atlases of their time. The first example is the 1896 West Virginia edition. This geography is complete with 22 full-page, and two double-page copperplate maps, including Map of the United States and an uncolored No. 1 Map of the Globe,..., a nicely illustrated example with a Comparative Heights of the Chief Mountains Above the Sea Level across the bottom of the map. Complete with 136 pages, quarto (9.8" x 12.5"). Hardbound in original brown cloth with printed title on front. The maps and text pages are very good with only an occasional finger mark. The covers are rubbed and shelf worn with a small amount of loss at the corners and extremities of the spine.

The second geography, Mitchell's New Primary Geography 1891, has a beautifully engraved decorative title page, and is complete with 15 single-page, and two double-page maps. The Map of the Territories and the Adjacent States locates Yellowstone National Park and shows the panhandle of Oklahoma divided into a "Public Land Strip (to Oklahoma)" and the "Cherokee Outlet (to Indian Ty.)" Complete with 114 pages, large 8vo. (7.8 x 9.3"). Hardbound in original brown cloth with printed title on front. The contents are foxed and there are some ink smudges on a couple pages. There are several pencil notations inside the covers and on the endpapers. The covers are a bit soiled and rubbed. With some minor shelf wear with a tiny amount of loss. The spine and binding are good.
