This is a complete example of one of the first scientific books on oceanography. Subject matter includes extensive studies of the Gulf Stream, land and sea breezes, the atmosphere, currents of the sea, the Arctic Ocean, salts of the sea, the equatorial cloud-ring, a geological agency of the winds, depths of the ocean, basin of the Atlantic, as well as thorough coverage of climates, drift, storms, routes, trade-winds and more. Bound into the back of the book are six folding maps, plus diagrams and a view. One of the maps details the range of whales over the ocean's drift, an early systematic look at prevailing ocean currents. 6th edition, 348 pp, +xvi, 8vo. Hardbound in original brown cloth covers with gilt title on spine and a decorative gilt vignette on the front.

One chart (Basin of the Atlantic Ocean) is split along a fold. There is some light to moderate toning along some folds on the other maps. Text pages are generally very good with a bit of toning along the edges and some staining to the front endpaper. The covers have some minor shelf wear. The spine and binding are sound.
