This scarce atlas is the only 19th century state atlas of Nebraska. It contains 165 colored maps and numerous uncolored, beautifully rendered lithographs that show farms and important buildings in a charming folk-art style. The large foldout, Official Topographical Map of Nebraska (30 x 15") has an inset listing the states' Congressional and Judicial Districts, and locates the Surveyor Generals Office, U.S. Land Offices, County Seats, Towns and Villages, Completed Railroads, Land District Boundaries, Railroad Land Grant Limits, Military Reservations, Indian Reservations, Townships Subdivided, Dry Beds of Creeks, and Sand and Sand Hills. This map is printed on banknote paper, and includes the engraved signature of D.V. Stephenson, U.S. Surveyor General. The plates are numbered from 8 to 207, and cover each of the states counties, and their major towns and cities. At the end of each section are two unnumbered pages of statistics and other information describing the preceding county. This complete atlas will be a real treasure after professional rebinding. Hardbound in original burgundy cloth covered boards with half leather spine and tips. Gilt title on front.

References: Phillips (A) 2107; Phillips (M), pg. 461.

Condition: B+

The maps are generally very good to fine. The foldout map is loose, with some ragged edges, not affecting the image. The covers and spine are separated and the first signature is disbound which includes the blank end papers, title page, Preface, Contents, and the first eight maps. Like the map of Iowa, the loose pages are rough on some edges. The last few pages are also loose. Both covers are loose, soiled and shelf worn with some loss of leather at tips and spine. The spine is mostly missing. The atlas would benefit from the attention of a binder.
