This is a superb plan of the Dutch city of Batavia and the surrounding countryside. The map is illustrated with tiny vignettes of people and animals in the fields and several ships in the harbor. The title is engraved in a cartouche styled as the wall of a fortress with a cannon pointed at the viewer. Nieuhoff accompanied a delegation of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to the Emperor of China between 1655 to 1658. After his return he published his journals and provided the European public with one of the first richly illustrated books describing the exotic Orient.
