This lot contains two (of four) of the most interesting cartographic curiosities providing historical information in tabular form, both drawn by Johann Seutter.

1) Pontificum Romanorum Series Chronologica shows a massive figure of the Pope with his hand raised in benediction. His vestment is covered with a list of all of the popes from the 1st to the 17th century, each with a symbol that corresponds to the end of the pope's reign and indicates it as abdication or death, both natural and unnatural. This key is printed in French with a German key pasted at the top, so you can lift it and see the French key. St. Peter's cathedral is shown in the background with Romulus and Remus before it.
2) Icon Synoptica Sac. Rom. Imp... is the third plate in the series. It depicts the gigantic symbolic figure of an Elector in full robes, covered with listings of all the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire, princes, electors, and dukes. At the left is a pillar of heraldic coats of arms and on the right the crown and chair of state.

Condition: C+

Both sheets have dark impressions and original color. The first has some tears into the print, with one at the left about 3.5" long. There are some printer's creases and a few spots and stains. The second has some areas of loss into the left side of the print that have been backed with paper.
