This is a very charming, colorful map, published by H.W. Faust, showing the city's layout at the end of the nineteenth century. This map has an inset showing a broader view of the Bay area, and a legend that explains some of the features of the map, such as ward boundaries and streetcar routes. Interestingly, the most prominent landmarks are several large cemeteries taking up much of the real estate near Golden Gate Park. In the later part of the nineteenth century Henry W. Faust issued about fifteen editions of his map of San Francisco both in pocket form (accompanied by a street directory, city guide, or both, or neither) and as wall maps. All editions of this map are uncommon. Printed by Galloway Litho. Co.

References: Phillips (M) p.778.

Condition: B+

A nice example, issued folding, now flattened and professionally backed with tissue, repairing a 4.5" tear into the map at right. There is a faint trace of offsetting.

Estimate: $600 - $800
