"Map of California: from the Latest Authorities as Published in the United States", Bentley, Richard

A very uncommon little map published in the year of the great California Gold Rush. From a book written by Alexander Mackay, it is based primarily on Fremont's 1848 map of the region, with his route noted. The interior of the map is filled with notes on the topography, commenting particularly upon the aridness of the region. The Santa Fe Trail is named as the Great Spanish Trail and the path is clearly shown from the Rio Grande to Los Angeles, with roads leading north to San Francisco and south to Baja California.

A sound example with folds as issued. The map has a few light spots and is trimmed close as issued, with the right binding side and lower margin under 1/8".
