Authored by Fay Jackson Smith, John L. Kessell, and Francis J. Fox with an Introduction by Barry Goldwater. This is an important description of the history of the early Spanish missions in Arizona. It includes a translation of Kino's "Relacion Diaria" from 1698, which documents the missionary's first attempt to locate the mouth of the Gila River. This terrific read includes dramatic passages describing hostilities between Christians and many of the Indian tribes who inhabited the region, archaeological discoveries at Tumacacori and Guevavi, and an extensive bibliography. The book contains two maps (one folding) in facsimile, and is illustrated with four color plates and a black-and-white photograph. Hardbound in original gray cloth with gilt title on spine and a decorative gilt logo on the front cover. The author's signature (John L. Kessell) and a personal note to a previous owner is inscribed on the front endpaper. Arizona Historical Foundation, Phoenix, AZ, 1966. 142 pp.
