This volume covers the first half of 1757 and is filled with interesting articles providing a glimpse into 18th century life. The book is illustrated with three folding maps (2 in full original color), several uncolored copper engravings and an attractive and colorful botanical plate of a Nutmeg. 12mo. 338 pages plus a six page index. Hardbound in original marbled boards with gilt title on a leather spine.
The Universal Magazine produced some of the best executed and most attractive of the magazine maps of this period. The maps in this volume are fitting examples; with two beautifully engraved by Richard Seale, embellished with decorative cartouches and hand colored in the bold style of the period. This volume is missing the map of the war in North America. The remaining maps (13.8 x 11") are:
A New and Accurate Map of the Kingdom of Prussia… centered on the Baltic Sea and includes parts of Sweden and Denmark.
A New and Correct Map of the Coast of Africa from Cape Blanco to the Coast of Angola… includes a drape-style inset detailing the Gold Coast.
Marshal Saxe's Ne Method of Forification this uncolored engraving is a bold fortification plan.
