This is an uncommon view of Russia, centered on Moscow. The map is focused on a canal that would link the River Don to the Volga near Moscow and provide a navigable transportation system throughout the heart of Russia. This was one of the impressive projects initiated by Peter the Great. It was the second attempt to build a canal linking the rivers; the first work was done by the Ottoman Turks in 1569. This was an unsuccessful attempt, but the Lenin Volga-Don canal would ultimately be built in the mid-20th century. The laborers are shown in the background and foreground of the cartouche. Engraved by Andries van Damme.
