Terrific early map puzzle with its original wooden box. The map is Gall & Inglis' England and Wales, which is colored by counties and includes insets of the Channel and Scilly Isles. The map (11 x 14.3") is pasted onto a thick board and hand cut into interlocking puzzle pieces. The box (7.8 x 9" x 1.75") is illustrated with a colorful lithographed scene including the allegorical female representations of America, Europe, Africa, Asia surrounded by numerous artifacts representing the arts and sciences. William Peacock & Co. were prolific publishers of educational puzzles from the middle to the late 19th century. They did not produce their own maps, but used those already on the market, principally those made by George Philip & Son and Gall & Inglis. This puzzle has had three missing pieces replaced with new pieces - Bedford, Cardigan, and a small piece of the English Channel.
