This rare California Gold Rush book is the highly regarded, and difficult to find, third edition by Theodore T. Johnson. It features the rarely seen Map of the Gold Region From actual survey by direction of Com. Jones 1849 (6" x 7.5"). This delicately hand colored, foldout map shows the early and important gold camps and settlements. It locates Yuba, Capt. Sutters, the Sinclair's, Sacramento City, Sutters Fort, the Culoma Mill, the camps of Murphy, Angels, Mr. Insay, Dalor, Webster, and more. The map extends to San Francisco with a road leading to the gold locations. Legend identifies ranches, diggings, and roads. The extensive road system features distances in miles between each location. Below the neatline: "Copy right secured. Lith. by T. Sinclair, Philada." It is still bound in the original book which also contains the six beautifully engraved views of San Francisco, Panama, the Entrance to Straits of Karquinez, Monte Diablo, Benicia and Sonoma. An appendix contains "full instructions to emigrants by The Overland Route to Oregon, for their outfit, wagons, cattle, provisions, health, etc., by Hon. Samuel R. Thurston, delegate in Congress from Oregon". Title page, dedication, Preface, Table of Contents, 348 pp. and 22 pages of interesting and amusing advertisements. Original hardbound in brown blind stamped cloth with the title in gilt on spine. An early and desirable book that is rarely seen with its scarce map.
