1) "Investing in Maps" by Roger Baynton-Williams, Cresset Press, 1969. This comprehensive guide discusses the range of maps that can be found on the market and approximate indications of their values, with descriptions of the methods by which they were made, and the men who made them. Even though the values are now quite out-dated, the book is still a good study in the various factors used in the analysis of value. 160 pp. with 16 color reproductions and many other BW illustrations. Hardbound in blue cloth, gold titles on spine, with protected dust jacket.

2) "Collecting Old Maps", F.J. Manasek, Norwich, VT, 1998. A major reference work for those seriously interested in starting a map collection. In the preface, the author states that he is writing for people who wish to acquire collectable maps, and he therefore uses maps that are available and not too expensive as his examples. The practical book addresses the issues of forgeries, condition, identification, research, purchasing and collection care. Valuable information for the novice collector as well as long-time serious collector. 320 pp., 250 illustrations in black and white and color. Hardbound with dust jacket. This most desirable reference work is now out of print and difficult to locate.

3) "Maps of America in Periodicals Before 1800", David C. Jolly, Brookline, MA, 1989. An excellent source for older material, this guide is comprised of 465 entries, and is indexed by place, publisher and the periodical it came from. In the preface, the author states that "It was noticed that many dealer catalogs did not attribute maps from 18th-century periodicals with the same accuracy as for maps from atlases.". This excellent booklet is a thorough and well executed resource for these types of maps. 120 pages. Soft covers.
