"Totius Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Novissima Repraesentatio…", Homann, Johann Christoph

This attractive map is a revision of the elder Homann's 1710 map of the Americas. After his death in 1724, his son (Johann Christoph Homann) re-engraved the plate to correct the western coastline of North America, shown here extending very far west and north, with very little detail, save for the name of Terra Esonis Incognita. California is no longer shown as an island, although the remnants of the interior sea can be seen near the Pais de Moozemleck, and a hint of a hoped for Northwest Passage is beginning to take shape. The Great Lakes are more defined, being actively explored by the French fur traders and the Hudsons Bay Company. The map is decorated with two large pictorial cartouches, the one at top shows natives on the right worshipping a fearsome demon, while at left they listen placidly to a priest. The lower cartouche features the landscape, native fauna and two natives.

Condition: B

Pretty original hand coloring on a map with some light stains, some from candle wax. There is some toning on the centerfold, and a repair in the lower margin with archival tape. The margins are somewhat frayed, and a portion of the lower right corner is mostly detached, now reattached with archival tape.
