This French thematic atlas focuses mainly on Great Britain, but also includes information on Switzerland , France, Savoy, Lorraine and the Republic of Venice. There are 13 copper engraved double page folding maps and 17 double page engravings that serve as chronological and genealogical tables. These tables are embellished with numerous vignettes of local inhabitants and related maps. The maps are decorated with numerous portraits of the British Monarchy through the centuries and the coats-of-arms of influential families. Contemporary brown calf covers with gilt embossed edges and spine. This complete folio atlas includes both text title pages, one printed in red and black. The third title page is a handsome engraved view that is filled with allegorical figures including women, geographers, heraldry, soldiers, ships and a winged lion. It was designed by the renowned Dutch artist Romain de Hooghe and engraved by Sluyter. Very nice original binding in brown calf with gilt and tooling along edges. The spine has raised bands with gilt title. A beautiful, complete example.

References: Phillips (A) #579.

The text and maps are generally clean and bright, very good to fine. Covers are quite nice with very little scuffing and rubbing, corners bumped. The raised spine is near fine, all signatures tight.
