Three engravings of images from the Second Grinnell Expedition in search of Sir John Franklin, who disappeared with his ships and crew of the Erebus and Terror on an expedition into the Arctic in 1845. Many searches were conducted for the lost crew, who were found to have been frozen in the ice of Victoria Strait, and to have perished of starvation and other factors over a period of years. Dr. Kane was a surgeon on one of those voyages searching for the ships, and he also recorded these images of the American Grinnell Expedition.
1) Crossing the Ice Belt at Coffee Gorge.
2) Midnight in September.
3) Kasarsoak, Sanderson's Hope. Upernavik.
