"The English Atlas, Volume IV. Containing the Description of the Seventeen Provinces of the Low-Countries, or the Netherlands", Pitt, Moses

A dramatic, allegorical title page from the fourth volume of this atlas, featuring Europa holding a quiver of arrows, seated on a lion while being crowned with laurel by Victoria. To her left is the helmeted personification of the Netherlands supporting a Liberty Pole topped by a Liberty Cap. On the right is Lady Liberty with her tablet and torch, and a cock (symbol of courage) at her feet. Several other allegorical figures, a ship, and a battle scene fill the vivid sheet. The coats of arms below represent the those of the provinces in the Netherlands. The border is ruled in red ink, as are the attached two pages that contain the description of the volume with a view of the theater, and the dedication page to King James.
